Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year!

I am excited to begin the school year at Calahan Community Charter. As a returning parent you know, Calahan is a wonderful place for children to learn and grow. If you are new to Calahan, you will soon learn about our dedicated and committed staff.  As a staff, we are dedicated to providing a quality education to all students.

To ensure your child’s success, we recommend that you talk to your child about their day, bring them to school daily, arrive on-time and ready to learn, ensure that you check their homework, read with your child daily, support school-wide events, and communicate with your child’s teacher.

I look forward to working with all of you this year and seeing you at school-wide events. It is the school community that makes our school strong. We have an active PTA and parents on every committee, we need you to make a difference for all of our children.

This year, we have some new faces at Calahan. We have three new teachers on our staff. I hope that you will join me in welcoming Ms. Kovacs in Fifth Grade, Ms. De Guzman in First Grade and Ms. Scanlan in our Autism classroom. We have many new afterschool coaches in our YDP, YS and YMCA programs. Finally, we are lucky to have a new APEIS, Katherine Chavez joining our team. Please be sure to welcome them.

District-wide, there have been changes in the Elementary Reading Program. We have adopted Benchmark for our schools reading program and it looks a bit different then our last program. We look forward to this change but students may take some time to adapt to this new series. The largest change is that there is no longer a large textbook (or anthology) because they get to write in their books.

As the principal, my staff and I are here to assist you. Understand that at Calahan, the students come first. We do our best to return calls within 24 hours. You may need to wait a minute if we are helping a student but we are here to serve you. Please feel free to contact me at the office 818-886-4612 or email me at michelle.wells@lausd.net with your concerns or questions.
