Mrs. Camargo
Salutations! Welcome to our webpage. My name is Mrs. Camargo (formerly Ms. Sheida) and this is my 17th year teaching at Calahan Elementary School. I am a native of California and a product of LAUSD. I received my bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco and my master's degree and teaching credential from Pepperdine University. I speak fluent Spanish and know a little Farsi. I have taught third, fourth, fifth, and split grades. I have a passion for reading and technology. I love being a teacher! :)

Mrs. Camargo - Fifth Grade
Math
We are learning to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. We are reasoning abstractly and quantitatively. In 5th grade, our instructional time focuses on three critical areas: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); (2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume.
Language Arts
We are learning to read text closely, pay attention to details, and annotate to gain a deeper understanding of the text. Using text evidence is a critical component. We are reading a variety of genres. We are referring to the text to explain and support our thinking. We are focusing on theme, craft, structure, perspective, and types of figurative language. We use the six traits of writing on a daily basis. We are integrating the traits as we write expository/informative, narrative, and opinion pieces.
Science
We are learning about life, earth, and the physical sciences. We are studying mixtures and solutions, living systems, and weather and water cycling in earth's atmosphere. Students are expected to demonstrate grade-appropriate proficiency in developing and using models, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, using mathematics and computational thinking, engaging in argument from evidence, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information; and to use these practices to demonstrate understanding of the core ideas.
Social Studies
We are study the development of the nation up to 1850, with an emphasis on the people who were already here, when and from where others arrived, and why they came. Students learn about the colonial government founded on Judeo Christian principles, the ideals of the Enlightenment, and the English traditions of self government. They recognize that ours is a nation that has a constitution that derives its power from the people, that has gone through a revolution, that once sanctioned slavery, that experienced conflict over land with the original inhabitants, and that experienced a westward movement that took its people across the continent.
