Welcome to Fifth Grade!

My name is Susan Dunn, and I am so pleased to be your child's teacher this year.  I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.  In November 2015, I was recognized by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and qualified as a National Board Certified Teacher.  I have been teaching for 27 years, the last 17 of which have been at Calahan.

I love to read and look forward to sharing my love of books with your child.  It is my goal to give your child a valuable learning experience this year, to teach him or her important concepts and learning strategies, and to provide an atmosphere where success is promoted and rewarded as I strive to prepare him or her for their future educational pursuits.

My e-mail address is susan.dunn@lausd.net.  Parents, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

We Learn New Things Every Day!

Math

We are learning to explain our thinking as we solve problems and show we understand numbers and what they represent.  We are learning to calculate with precision and check our work.

Reading

We are learning to pay attention to details as we read.  We talk with each other about our reading, and compare texts to look for similarities and differences.  We are reading in class every day for at least 30 minutes.  Our classroom library wall is being filled with book spines!

Writing

We are writing strong paragraphs, filled with details and descriptive language.  We use evidence to prove our answers.

Science

We are studying about the Earth's biomes.  Next, we will study the atmosphere of the Earth and how the curvature of the Earth affects weather.  After our Earth Science unit, we will move on to Life Science and learn about photosynthesis.  At the end of the year, we will learn about mixtures, solutions, and compounds.  Exploring the world of Physical Science is always fascinating.  It's a jam-packed year of Science!

Social Studies

We are learning about the Native American Regions and how each habitat influenced the lifestyle of the region.  Next, we will learn about the explorers of North America and the challenges they faced.  Our final units of study will cover the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary War, and the making of a new nation.  I look forward to our Sail America Exposition in May.  I hope you will be able to join us then.
