Orchestra Program

The Calahan & CSUN Orchestra Program

Calahan Community Charter in combination with music education majors from California State University Northridge (CSUN), offers students in the fourth and fifth grades an opportunity to participate in our unique orchestra program. For the past 15 years, university students from neighboring CSUN have been volunteering their free time to enrich students' lives with the joy of music.

For the 2013-2014 school year, there were 10 different music teachers providing our students with instruction on how to play the flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and violin. Every year, two of these music teachers receive Ricky Gelb scholarship awards to act as student administrators of the music program. Their job is to recruit more teachers, set goals, and organize the program. The orchestra program at Calahan Community Charter is a great outlet for these college students to gain real teaching experience as they continue to develop their musical talents.

Students at Calahan benefit from a program that is rich in self-expression. Students are exposed to a variety of instruments, choral arrangements, and styles of music to enhance their educational experience and foster their academic, social, and emotional growth. Music study enhances teamwork skills and discipline. In order for an orchestra to sound good, all players must work together harmoniously towards a single goal, the performance, and must commit to learning music, attending rehearsals, and practicing.

A highlight of the orchestra program is our Spring Concert. Students have an opportunity to showcase their developing skills within their instrument group, as a possible soloist, and perform as an ensemble cast.

We thank all students and adults involved for their continued support in ensuring the Calahan Orchestra is a success. We hope to see you at our next concert!
